A few weeks back we bemoaned the demolition of Craig Ellwood’s Zimmerman House. Well, today we share gladder tidings. One of the coolest-ever Ellwood homes, The Smith House, just hit the market.
What this 1,550 square foot home lacks in size, it easily makes up for in style and provenance. Built in 1958, the Smith House is shaped like a “T”, designed to maximize both natural light and ocean views. The home was widely lauded when new, shot by Julius Shulman and featured numerous times in Arts + Architecture magazine.
The main living area floats two and half stories high, supported above the hillside thanks to exposed cantilever beams. The indoor remains “period correct” with brick and wood tones bringing needed warmth to the minimal space. Car ports on alternate sides of the home make for unique and satisfyingly symmetrical two-car parking. With a $2,255/sqft asking price, the Smith House doesn’t come cheap. But what does these days?
