Saturdays are for visiting open houses for homes you’ll never actually buy. This weekend I found myself at 5457 Cottonwood Club Drive in Salt Lake City, a home designed by Stephen MacDonald in 1964.

I love this one. MacDonald designed the space with the aim of what he called "soft modernity" or organic modern design. The construction utilizes large aggregate wall forms that were cast flat and then tilted into place. The interior features a water feature running through the living space like a stream, bisecting the main room and continuing into the backyard. Large boulders, polished by years of use as stepping stones enhance the organic feel. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls at the rear open to the outdoor fountain, ensuring the sound of water permeates throughout the property. The home retains many original architectural details, including beautifully integrated pegboard and pristine light wood veneer.
