Five Fun Furniture Ads
And Curated Mid-Century Modern Home Listings đ
Advertising should be fun, especially for furniture.
Before the algorithms, the A/B tests, and the infinite scroll, ads had to do one thing well, make you feel something on paper. In the post-war era, fun and whimsical proved an effective approach. Here are five nostalgic ads to start your Monday off right:
âChairs by Eamesâ 1950s:
Typography really does the heavy lifting here. I think âexpanded facilities permit prompt shippingâ is as close to Amazon Prime as the fifties had to offer.
Herman Miller â Multi Product Print Advert (1955):
This Multi-product spread looks like a greatest hits album in hindsight, featuring a George Nelson Marshmallow Sofa, Alexander Girard Textiles, Isamu Noguchi Table and Charles Eames DKX side chairs:
May We Send You Printed Brochure? Knoll 1954:
Hebert Matterâs playful, repeating pattern of Eero Saarinenâs model 71 and 72 plastic shell chairs (the predecessors to his famous pedestal/Tulip series) upholstered in vibrant Knoll textiles is perfect.
Pomona Tile from a 1957 issue of Arts + Architecture:
Pomona Tile was a big deal during its heyday and the hand painted Bahama Reef Series is about as fun as tile gets.
Fresh From Motorola 1961:
Illustrator Charles Schridde created some of my favorite ads of all time, in this one, a TV you could put just about anywhere.
