Wright Never Earned a Formal Degree: At age 19 he was admitted to University of Wisconsin at Madison to study civil engineering but abandoned his studies shortly thereafter. Some 69 years later, the same university presented Wright with an honorary doctorate of fine arts.
He Had an Epic Car Collection: Wright collected and enjoyed cars he felt embodied ‘thoughtful design’. These included various Bentleys, Jaguars, Packards, Cadillacs, ACs and Mercedes-Benz’. Bright red was the color of choice.
Wright designed over 1,000 homes: The Prairie School Pioneer was beyond prolific over a 70-year creative period. Of the roughly 1,114 designs he produced, 532 were realized, including 14 in Japan!
Wright’s son invented Lincoln Logs: The iconic redwood construction toys, Lincoln Logs, were created by Wright’s son John Lloyd Wright. The concept was first developed in 1916 while John was working with his father in Japan. Lincoln Logs and John Lloyd Wright were both inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.
Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead was inspired by Wright: The 1943 novel, The Fountainhead, presents the struggle of a genius architect, battling against mediocrity and a stifling bureaucracy. Rand shared that the book’s protagonist, Howard Roark, was inspired by Wright’s ideas and approach to architecture.
